Guitar Setup

Want to have your acoustic or electric guitar with the perfect setup? Then you've come to the right place in our workshop!

A good setup consists of several parts where you look closely at:

  • the action: the height of the strings above the frets,
  • the truss rod: controls the curvature of the neck,
  • intonation: ensures that the guitar is ‘octave pure’. This means that an open string is the same as the octave in the 12th position.

These are the most important parts that you not only look at during a tuning, but also adjust according to your wishes. And there is much more that can be done during a tuning, like polishing the frets, smoothing the sharp edges, adjusting the height of the pickups, taking into account a certain type of strings and so on. A good adjustment will make the guitar play like butter!

The fun, but also the tricky thing about guitars is that they are all different. Just like guitarists! So what one person thinks is perfect, is just not perfect for another. This means that it often takes some time to find the perfect setup for your guitar.

Banjo or Mandolin Setup

Besides the setup of the guitars, our luthiers also provide your banjo and mandolin with a fresh setup! Although we also look at the nut and neck, a setup for these instruments is slightly different from guitars. For instance, a setup of a mandolin already takes more time because 2 extra strings need to be replaced. With a banjo, the banjo skin also needs to be tuned and it is more difficult to find the perfect intonation because the bridge is loose on the skin.

Because these setups take more time, we charge a price of €85 for these instruments. This also applies to classical guitars, which is why those instruments also fall under this price category.

When Is A Setup Needed?

Guitars, banjos and mandolins are all made of different types of wood and changes in temperature and humidity keep that wood ‘working’. It shrinks a bit, it expands and these tiny changes make your guitar play, feel and sound slightly different. This effect is normal and unavoidable. Even better: most guitars are built with it in mind, because you can easily adjust the curve of the neck and the height of the bridge, among other things.

Especially with the change of seasons, these changes are the greatest, which is why our advice is to tune your guitar at least once or twice a year.

Our Setups

In our workshop, we offer 3 different types of setups. Below, we explain each option:

Small Setup

Our small setup not only involves oiling the fretboard, polishing frets and replacing your guitar's strings. The luthier also looks at your guitar's tuning and adjusts it. This can include adjusting the action, setting the neck properly with the trussrod, and checking and optimising the intonation.

You can also specify your personal preferences so that the luthier adjusts your guitar the way you want it!

Price List Small Setup

Small Setup

  • Acoustic/Electric/Bass/Ukulele €75,-
  • Classical/Banjo/Mandolin
    €85,-
  • Acoustic 12 String €95,-
  • Floyd Rose Tremolo €140,-
  • All prices do not include a ‘small material’ fee of €2.25 and any additional charges for new strings.

Large Setup

As you probably expect, the large setup goes one step further than the small setup. Besides a setup of the guitar and optimising the intonation, the frets are also flattened and crowned. The final step is the ‘fret dressing’, which means that the edges of the frets are rounded, so that you don't have to deal with sharp fret edges.

So the result is a perfectly setup guitar that feels great in the hand. So for optimal playing feel, we highly recommend our large setup!

PLEK Setup

The precision offered by a PLEK machine, down to a thousandth of a millimetre, is unsurpassed.

Our luthiers are well trained to provide this exclusive service. With the best of man and machine, you're sure to get the ideal setup! And good to know: if you bought your guitar from us, you'll get a €50 discount on a PLEK Setup!

We offer several PLEK options. For example, you can choose the PLEK Standard where the frets are crowned and ‘dressed’, meaning the fret edges are rounded. As a second option, the PLEK can also cut out a new nut. Do you have a fan-fret or multi-scale guitar? The PLEK machine can do that too! On a multi-scale guitar, the frets are only flattened and a luthier performs the crowning and fret dress.

Please note that some guitars, with (very) different shapes, without a truss rod or 12-string guitars cannot go in the PLEK machine. In doubt? Contact us to find out if your guitar can get a PLEK Setup.
