An archtop guitar is a steel-stringed acoustic or semi-acoustic guitar with a curved top that became popular in the 1940s. The original acoustic archtop guitars were designed to increase volume and were therefore built for use with relatively heavy strings. Even after the introduction of electric guitars, jazz guitarists often continue to use 0.012’ strings or heavier because of the tone, preferring flatwound strings.
