De D-42 onderscheidt zich van standaard dreadnoughts door zijn gedetailleerde afwerking. De ivoroid bindingen en stijl 42 abalone inleg zijn niet alleen op de body te vinden, maar ook op de hals, toets, headstock, en zelfs de brug. De gouden open-geared tuners, in combinatie met het abalone block-logo op de headstock, geven het instrument een uitstraling van autoriteit die perfect past bij zijn krachtige klankkarakter.
