Arguably, few in the annals of rock & roll history possess as much main-character energy as Jerry Garcia's guitars. "Wolf," "Tiger," "Rosebud", each a trusted companion with its own story woven into Jerry Garcia's legacy and countless collaborations. Yet the tale truly starts with his inaugural signature guitar, "Alligator," bestowed upon Garcia after Graham Nash acquired it in 1970.

Toen de beroemde Britse singer-songwriter en muzikant Graham Nash in mei 1971 zijn solodebuutalbum "Songs for Beginners" uitbracht, was hij erg blij met Jerry Garcia's bijdragen aan de sessies. Garcia omarmde de Stratocaster onmiddellijk als zijn primaire instrument voor de volgende twee jaar, waarin het aanzienlijke modificaties onderging, markerend zijn eerste uitstapje naar uitgebreide gitaaraanpassingen. Hoewel de Grateful Dead en Garcia bekend stonden om het zwaar modificeren van hun apparatuur via Alembic, hun eigen gear company, was het deze specifieke Stratocaster die in eerste instantie uitgebreide modificaties onderging en daarmee een precedent schepte voor de band. Garcia's getransformeerde Stratocaster werd al snel een geliefde favoriet onder fans en hemzelf, liefkozend "Alligator" genoemd nadat Garcia de slagplaat had versierd met een grijnzende cartoon alligator sticker in 1972.
Deze Stratocaster vergezelde Jerry Garcia tijdens wat algemeen wordt beschouwd als de meest legendarische tour in de geschiedenis van de Grateful Dead, prominent aanwezig op hun iconische dubbele live-album, *Europe '72*. Opmerkelijk is dat deze tour de eerste en enige optredens van de Grateful Dead in Nederland was. De video hieronder is een goed voorbeeld van hoe de Alligator Stratocaster evolueerde tijdens de tour. Je ziet Jerry Garcia "Truckin'" spelen op de Alligator Strat voordat deze zijn iconische sticker kreeg. Op dat moment stond het instrument waarschijnlijk gewoon bekend als "de Strat".
De Fender Custom Shop kreeg de kans om deze legendarische gitaar uit de eerste hand na te bouwen, waarbij Master Builder Austin MacNutt onbekende details ontdekte tijdens het onderzoeken van het origineel. "Het is een stukje Amerikaanse geschiedenis," merkte MacNutt op. De basis van de Alligator gitaar bestaat uit een 55 Stratocaster. De Stratocaster onderging uitgebreide modificaties door Alembic, waaronder Ron Wickershams baanbrekende voorversterker en aangepaste bedrading door Rick Turner en Frank Fuller. Hij heeft een custom rosewood en messing staartstuk, een messing brug gemonteerd in een messing blok, een scalloped messing topkam en een gehamerde messing slagplaat en jack plate.
Elk van MacNutt's 100 Custom Shop stukken is een getrouwe reproductie van de originele Alligator, inclusief de iconische alligator sticker, andere replica stickers, handwound '55 Strat single-coil pickups en replica "hat" knoppen. When renowned British singer-songwriter and musician Graham Nash released his solo debut album "Songs for Beginners" in May 1971, he was delighted with Jerry Garcia’s contributions to the sessions. As a token of appreciation, Nash presented Garcia with a special gift, a 1955 Stratocaster that Nash had purchased the previous year from a pawn shop in Phoenix, Arizona, for $250.
Garcia promptly embraced the Stratocaster as his primary instrument for the next two years, during which it underwent significant modifications, marking his first foray into extensive guitar customization. While the Grateful Dead and Garcia were renowned for heavily modifying their equipment through Alembic, their own gear company, it was this particular Stratocaster that initially underwent extensive modifications, setting a precedent for the band. Garcia's transformed Stratocaster soon became a beloved favorite among fans and himself, affectionately dubbed "Alligator" after Garcia adorned its pickguard with a grinning cartoon alligator sticker in 1972.
This Stratocaster accompanied Jerry Garcia throughout what is widely regarded as the most legendary tour in Grateful Dead history, prominently featured on their iconic double live album, *Europe ’72*. Notably, this tour marked the Grateful Dead's first and only performances in The Netherlands. The video below is a great example of how the Alligator Stratocaster evolved during the tour. It shows Jerry Garcia playing "Truckin'" on the Alligator Strat before it received its iconic sticker. At that time, it was probably just known as "the Strat."
The Fender Custom Shop had the opportunity to recreate this legendary guitar firsthand, with Master Builder Austin MacNutt discovering previously unknown details while examining the original. "It's a piece of American history," remarked MacNutt. The base of the Alligator guitar consists of a 55 Stratocaster. The Stratocaster underwent extensive modifications by Alembic, including Ron Wickersham's pioneering preamp, as well as custom wiring by Rick Turner and Frank Fuller. It features a custom rosewood and brass tailpiece, a brass bridge mounted into a brass block, a scalloped brass nut, and a hammered brass pickguard and jack plate.
Each of MacNutt’s 100 Custom Shop pieces faithfully recreates the original Alligator, including the iconic alligator decal, other replica stickers, hand-wired '55 Strat single-coil pickups, and replica "hat" control knobs. The guitar comes in the original "Alligator" hardshell case with TFOA passport.

Diese Tournee war der erste und einzige Auftritt der Grateful Dead in den Niederlanden. Jedes der 100 Custom Shop-Teile von MacNutt ist eine originalgetreue Nachbildung der Alligator, einschließlich des kultigen Alligator-Aufklebers, anderer nachgebildeter Aufkleber, handverdrahteter 55er Strat-Singlecoil-Tonabnehmer und nachgebildeter "Hut"-Knöpfe.
