Beard Guitars is a name synonymous with craftsmanship and innovation in the world of resonator guitars. The story of Beard Guitars began when founder Paul Beard became fascinated by resonator guitars at the age of 18 and started repairing stringed instruments. With degrees in Aviation Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering, and support from family and friends, he launched his musical career as a teacher, string instrument technician and performer.

As a musician, Paul was often disappointed by the quality of resonator guitars available. This inspired him to focus his skills on designing and building the next generation of instruments. The first Beard resonator guitar was delivered to a customer in 1985. Since then, Paul has worked hard to make the highest quality instruments that take advantage of new technologies and techniques, while honouring the tradition of the Dopyera family.

Beard Legacy E Curly Maple

The story of Beard Guitars began in 1985 with the launch of the Legacy Series, a series of guitars that formed the core and reputation of Beard Guitars. So we have great news: we are now allowed to showcase the Beard Legacy E Curly Maple!

This guitar represents a contemporary approach to the open-body squareneck design. With its curved back, strategically placed tone stamps and a sturdier body, the Legacy E offers a rich and resonant sound that is extremely versatile. What makes this guitar special is the Curly Maple finish. Not only does this add a visually stunning element, but it also contributes to the bright and balanced sound that makes Beard Guitars so great!

Legacy Models

A-Body

The A-Body is Beard's version of a mini jumbo. With a 14-fret roundneck, a curved back, bass reflex baffle and its unique Odyssey soundhole, this guitar offers a deep, full sound that is both powerful and balanced!

R-Body

This recreation of the classic 1930s shape offers versatility through two different internal designs: soundwell and open-body construction. The R-Body models are ideal for musicians seeking an authentic, vintage sound combined with modern playability!

E-Body

This contemporary open-body squareneck design features a curved back, tone stamps and a slightly thicker body than the R-Body models. This guitar offers a rich, resonant sound perfect for a variety of playing styles.

Signature Models

Beard Guitars is also known for their signature models, especially the Jerry Douglas line. One of the most popular models is the Jerry Douglas BlackBeard. Jerry Douglas, THE legendary resonator guitarist, worked with Paul Beard to create instruments that reflect his unique playing style and sound. This model, a slimmer version of the original, combines all-body mahogany construction with a translucent finish. The result is a warm-sounding instrument without too many frills!

Here you can see a small sneak peek, we are already excited to share that we will also get to exhibit the BlackBeard next week!

Vesper Cone & Spider

Paul Beard has spent years studying the impact of oxidation on the tone and longevity of the cone, the heart of the resonator guitar. Aluminium cones are affected by oxidation over time, resulting in a rough and pitted surface that severely affects the tonal qualities of the resonator system.

This is why Paul is launching the following innovation: By applying a micro-thin ceramic polymer layer to the aluminium surface, it can protect the cone from oxidation. This innovative approach not only extends the life of the cone, but also significantly improves its sound qualities. The new cone offers improved sustain and a more pronounced high range, taking resonator guitar sound to the next level!

Cone's

The Legend Cone is an advanced resonator cone developed by Paul Beard. After years of experimenting and learning from an expert who turned all Dobro cones from the 1960s to the 1990s, Beard has designed a new cone shape. This cone is turned three times, providing improved sustain and response.

The Biscuit 9.5 is designed to enhance the classic blues sound. Earlier versions of this cone had spirals on the surface to increase strength, but this adversely affected the sound. This new version uses a high-quality aluminium alloy that allows the cone to be rotated without these spirals. This makes the cone stronger and provides better sustain and a responsive sound!

We are incredibly excited to add Beard Guitars to our range. All Beard guitars are handcrafted in Hagerstown, Maryland, and are therefore truly known for their excellent craftsmanship and innovative take on resonators! Coffee is ready, and we look forward to welcoming you and exploring the wonderful sounds of Beard Guitars together!
