Gypsy Jazz

Whilst Gypsy Jazz instruments may seem like a combination of a steel string and a classical guitar, they truly are an instrument of their own. Designed by the luthiers Selmer and Maccaferri, the first Gypsy Jazz guitar was an oddball at its time. It had a D-shaped soundhole (grande bouche or large mouth); wide, floating bridge; fancy tailpiece; gently arched (not carved) French spruce soundboard and ladder-braced top and back. The Selmer-Maccaferri was the first guitar with a cutaway and a steel-reinforced neck.

If you want to start playing Gypsy Jazz, one of these instruments is essential! The sound cannot be recreated with a regular steel or nylon stringed guitar. Good Gypsy Jazz instruments can be easily acquired under €1000,- and are available at The Fellowship of Acoustics. We also sell Gypsy Strings, which differ from regular steel or nylon strings.
