De Gibson Century of Progress werd in 1934 geïntroduceerd als een opvallende en luxe gitaar, speciaal ontworpen ter ere van de Century of Progress International Exposition in Chicago die werd gehouden in 1933 en 1934.

Deze wereldtentoonstelling draaide om technologische vooruitgang en innovatie, en Gibson wilde met dit model laten zien dat zij vooropliepen in zowel design als vakmanschap. Ondanks het feit dat deze tentoonstelling midden in de Grote Depressie plaatsvond werd deze door maar liefst 48 miljoen mensen bezocht.
Wat de Century of Progress direct herkenbaar maakt, is de spectaculaire afwerking. In plaats van de gebruikelijke houten toets en slagplaat, koos Gibson voor opvallend veel pearloid, een celluloid plastic met de uitstraling van parelmoer. Destijds beschouwd als modern en vooruitstrevend, werd het materiaal ook wel spottend mother of toilet seat genoemd, omdat het later veelvuldig werd gebruikt voor toiletzittingen. Toch zorgde deze excentrieke afwerking voor een uniek en luxueus uiterlijk, waarmee Gibson inspeelde op het thema van wetenschappelijke vooruitgang.
Deze LC uit 1934 behoort tot de vroege exemplaren met een kleine sunburst-afwerking op het sparren bovenblad. De pearloid toets draagt bij aan een snelle en gedefinieerde aanslag, wat samen met de soepele midrange zorgt voor een dynamisch en rijk klankbeeld. De robuuste mahonie hals heeft een uitgesproken V-profiel, wat bijdraagt aan de sustain en resonantie. Ondanks zijn substantiële dikte ligt de hals toch zeer comfortabel in de hand. De toets en kopplaat zijn verfraaid met ingelegd palissander en pearloid details, inclusief het originele Gibson-scriptlogo.
Gibson bouwde het model van 1933 tot en met 1941, en buiten het feit dat de gitaar bijzonder zeldzaam is ziet hij er ook nog simpelweg prachtig uit! De lichte speelsporen en subtiele craquelé dragen bij aan de vintage charme van de gitaar, die verder ook vrij van cracks is. Naast nieuwe stemmechanieken en een vervangen brugzadel heeft deze Gibson ook een refret gehad, maar deze LC Century of Progress is zonder twijfel een waardevol verzamelobject én een bijzonder stukje Gibson-geschiedenis!
This world's fair was all about technological progress and innovation, and Gibson wanted to show that they were at the forefront of both design and craftsmanship with this model. Despite the fact that this exposition took place in the middle of the Great Depression, it was visited by an astonishing 48 million people.
What makes the Century of Progress instantly recognizable is its spectacular finish. Instead of the usual wooden fingerboard and pickguard, Gibson opted for a striking amount of pearloid, a celluloid plastic with the appearance of mother of pearl. Considered modern and progressive at the time, the material was also derisively called mother of toilet seat, because it was later widely used for toilet seats. Nevertheless, this eccentric finish provided a unique and luxurious appearance, with which Gibson played on the theme of scientific progress.
This 1934 LC is one of the early examples with a small focused sunburst finish on the spruce top. The pearloid fingerboard contributes to a fast and defined attack, which together with the smooth midrange ensures a dynamic and rich sound image. The robust mahogany neck has a pronounced V-profile, which contributes to the sustain and resonance. Despite its substantial thickness, the neck is still very comfortable in the hand. The fingerboard and headstock are embellished with inlaid rosewood and pearloid details, including the original Gibson script logo.
Gibson built the model from 1933 to 1941, and besides the fact that the guitar is extremely rare, it also looks simply beautiful! The light playwear and subtle weather checking contribute to the vintage charm of the guitar, which is also free of cracks. In addition to replaced tuners and a newer bridge saddle, this Gibson has also had a refret, but this LC Century of Progress is without a doubt a valuable collector's item and a special piece of Gibson history!

Was das Century of Progress sofort erkennbar macht, ist sein spektakuläres Finish. Anstelle des üblichen Griffbretts und Schlagbretts aus Holz entschied sich Gibson für auffällig viel Perloid, einen Zelluloid-Kunststoff mit Perlmutt-Optik. Das damals als modern und fortschrittlich geltende Material wurde auch spöttisch als „Mutter von Toilettensitzen“ bezeichnet, da es später häufig für Toilettensitze verwendet wurde. Dennoch sorgte dieses exzentrische Finish für ein einzigartiges und luxuriöses Erscheinungsbild, mit dem Gibson das Thema des wissenschaftlichen Fortschritts aufgriff.
Diese LC aus dem Jahr 1934 ist eines der frühen Exemplare mit einem kleinen, fokussierten Sunburst-Finish auf der Fichtendecke. Das Perloid-Griffbrett trägt zu einem schnellen und definierten Anschlag bei, der zusammen mit dem weichen Mitteltonbereich für ein dynamisches und sattes Klangbild sorgt. Der robuste Mahagonihals verfügt über ein ausgeprägtes V-Profil, das zum Sustain und zur Resonanz beiträgt. Trotz seiner beträchtlichen Dicke liegt der Hals immer noch sehr angenehm in der Hand. Das Griffbrett und die Kopfplatte sind mit eingelegten Details aus Palisander und Perlmutt verziert, darunter das originale Gibson-Schriftzuglogo.
Gibson hat das Modell von 1933 bis 1941 gebaut und abgesehen davon, dass die Gitarre extrem selten ist, sieht sie auch einfach wunderschön aus! Die leichten Spielspuren und die dezente Wettermarkierung tragen zum Vintage-Charme der Gitarre bei, die zudem frei von Rissen ist. Neben ausgetauschten Mechaniken und einem neueren Stegsattel hat diese Gibson auch ein Refret erhalten, aber diese LC Century of Progress ist ohne Zweifel ein wertvolles Sammlerstück und ein besonderes Stück Gibson-Geschichte!
