Gibson Les Paul
History of the Gibson Les Paul
Around 1950 Fender introduced the predecessor of the Fender Telecaster: the Fender Esquire and the Fender Broadcaster. Dit lead to a huge increase in demand for solid body electric guitars. To compete with Fender, Gibson turned to renowned musician Les Paul to work together with Gibson's Ted McCarthy and John Huis to design a new solid body electric guitar. Their result was the 1952 revealed Gibson Les Paul. The first Les Paul guitars were equipped with P90 pickups, but in 1957 Gibson decided to replace these with two Humbucker pickups for the Les Paul Standard. Later models, however, were equipped with different configurations. For example, the first Les Paul Customs got a triple-stack Humbucker configuration.
Even to this day, the Les Paul remains Gibson's most famous and successful guitar.
